Polly Scattergood "Bunny Club" - Tara Busch's Analog Suicide Mix! The Making Of...

It's no secret that we are great fans of the lovely Polly Scattergood here on Analog Suicide.

It was a thrill to remix her song 'Nitrogen Pink' (see this post), so I was quite happy when Polly asked me to remix  the final single from here newly released album, "Bunny Club". What appears to me as a  tangled tale of a young girl working in a nightclub, this song is quite simply a great display of Polly's lyrical genius, paired with another of Polly's strongest traits - the ability to seamlessly balance unsettling sonic darkness with pink- hard- candy sweetness.

As soon as we landed on the East Coast and set up shop, the stems were gathered and we set about cooking the Analog Suicide Mix.  I felt we could build a sort of sonic funhouse for 'Bunny Club', painting an alternate world inspired by the drama of '70's disco, sugary sweet, Disney inspired backing vocals atop crunchy electronic drums & a bass line line I can only describe as "what rubber popcorn might sound like when it pops"....all the while retaining the dark undercurrent.

The bass line appeared first, a combination of the most excellent ES 1 in Logic and synchronized bleeps from my beloved Pro One, which was then tweaked through my Moogerfooger Lo Pass Filter. I use this synth on just about everything, such as in this remix:

Next, The drums are a blend of a few different sets in Native Instruments' Battery 2 - quite simply a juicy bit of software that I simply cannot live without. Flexible, diverse and customizable, I find it impossible not to use this!

With the drums & bass anchored in place, we called upon the lovely powers of G Force software and their fantastic String Machine and M Tron Pro to create a dreamy sea on which Polly's vocal could set sail. The String Machine is a wonderfully equipped weapon filled with every kind of classic string machine you could possibly need! I chose the ARP Solina String Ensemble, later processing it through our Moogerfooger 12 - Stage Phaser. Also the lovely M - Tron Pro showed up for the choral midsection and ending providing glorious Mellotron MKII strings and bells.

Finally, most notably in the ending and midsection, I added swirls of Disney-esque backing vocals to push the "sweetness" end of the spectrum into delerium territory. The vocoded voice you hear is Polly's lead effected by the EVOC 20 in Logic - I love the element of melancholy that a vocoded voice seems to add; it provided a nice, dark , masculine element as well.

The result? A poppy yet melancholic 'night in the life' of Polly Scattergood's "Bunny Club" . Scoop up your Analog Suicide Remix of 'Bunny Club' right here:
